Preparing ground before building work starts, or clearing it once work is finished

Site clearance covers both ends of a building project — clearing vegetation, debris and obstructions before groundworks can begin, and clearing the site of construction waste and leftover material once the build is complete — and both stages matter for the project to run smoothly.

Before groundworks for an extension, driveway or garden project can start, the site often needs clearing first: overgrown vegetation, existing structures being removed, old hard-standing being broken out, or general debris that's accumulated on what's currently an unused or neglected area of the plot. This pre-build clearance sets the ground up for what comes next — a driveway sub-base or an extension's foundations both need a clear, accessible working area, and unresolved vegetation or obstructions left in place cause delays and complications once the actual construction trades arrive on site. At the other end of a project, once building work is finished, site clearance covers removing leftover materials, packaging, offcuts and general construction debris that's accumulated through the build, leaving the site properly tidy rather than handed back with builders' waste and material scraps still scattered around. For larger projects, site clearance can be a genuinely significant piece of work in its own right, particularly where a plot has been neglected for some time or where extensive vegetation and structures need clearing before construction can even be planned properly, let alone start — and getting an honest assessment of what's actually involved before a build begins avoids nasty surprises once groundworks are underway.
