Garden and green waste — hedge trimmings, grass cuttings, branches, cleared plant material — is a genuinely separate waste stream from general household rubbish, and treating it that way, right through to disposal, is both more responsible and, for larger volumes, more practical than trying to fit it into general collections.

Green waste generated from garden clearance, hedge cutting, lawn maintenance or landscaping work needs a different collection and disposal approach to general household rubbish, since organic plant material is typically processed through composting or green waste recycling routes rather than sent to landfill alongside mixed general waste. For smaller, regular garden maintenance, this might mean straightforward periodic collection, but larger clearance jobs — an overgrown garden being brought back under control, significant hedge or tree work, or preparation ahead of a landscaping project — generate volumes of green waste well beyond what a standard garden waste bin collection can accommodate, particularly where the clearance also includes larger branches, root material or established shrubs being removed entirely. Keeping green waste properly separated from general waste and other material types, both on site during collection and through to disposal, matters because it allows the organic material to actually be processed and composted rather than ending up in general landfill unnecessarily, which is the more responsible route for material that's entirely organic in the first place. Whether it's a standalone garden waste collection or waste generated as part of a wider garden design or clearance project, keeping this material in its own stream is standard practice rather than an optional extra.
