East Hertfordshire is home to Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire, along with Bengeo, Ware and Stanstead Abbotts — four towns sitting where the Rivers Beane, Mimram and Lea meet, giving this part of the district a genuinely distinct riverside character.

East Hertfordshire District Council covers a wide area of the county, and the corner we work in centres on Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire, sitting at the meeting point of the Rivers Beane, Mimram and Lea. Alongside Hertford, we cover Bengeo, the residential suburb immediately north of Hertford town centre, and Ware and Stanstead Abbotts, both on the River Lea further along the valley toward Hoddesdon and Broxbourne. This is a smaller cluster than some of the other districts we cover, but it's a distinctive one — Hertford's historic county town status has left a genuine mix of period property in and around its centre, and the riverside setting shared by Ware and Stanstead Abbotts along the Lea gives these towns their own particular character.
