Metal fencing and railings serve a different purpose to a timber privacy fence — usually front boundaries, security applications, or period properties where decorative wrought iron or steel railings suit the building's character far better than a solid timber panel would.

Metal fencing covers a genuinely wide range, from simple galvanised steel mesh fencing used for straightforward security and containment, to decorative wrought iron or steel railings with cast or forged detailing suited to period property frontages, to modern powder-coated steel panel systems used as a contemporary boundary treatment. Unlike timber, metal fencing is typically set into either a concrete base or individual metal posts bolted or set into concrete footings, and where the fence includes a gate, the gate posts in particular need to be substantial enough to carry the gate's weight without sagging over time, since a hung gate puts continuous leverage on its supporting post that a simple fence panel never does. Decorative railings are particularly common on period property frontages, where they're often original to the house's era of construction and worth matching in style and detail when replacing a damaged section, rather than replaced wholesale with a mismatched modern alternative that undermines the frontage's character. Powder-coated finishes on modern steel fencing resist corrosion far better than untreated metal, but any metal fence still benefits from periodic checking for coating damage, since exposed bare metal beneath a scratched or chipped coating is where corrosion actually starts.
