Closeboard & Feather Edge Fencing

A more robust, built-in-place alternative to pre-made fence panels

Closeboard fencing, built from overlapping vertical feather-edge boards nailed onto horizontal arris rails between posts, is a more robust and generally longer-lasting alternative to a pre-made panel fence, though it takes longer to install because it's built in place rather than fitted as pre-made sections.

Where a panel fence arrives as a pre-manufactured unit simply fitted between posts, closeboard fencing is built up in place, board by board: vertical feather-edge boards, tapered from thick to thin along their width, are nailed onto horizontal arris rails that run between the posts, each board overlapping the previous one by a set amount to give a continuous, gap-free screen with no visible joints or seams the way a panel fence sometimes shows at its post fixings. This method of construction is inherently stronger than a pre-made panel — because each board is individually fixed rather than relying on a single panel frame, damage to one board can be replaced individually without disturbing the whole run, and the overall structure tends to hold up better under sustained wind loading, which makes it a common choice for exposed or particularly long boundary runs where fence longevity matters more than speed of installation. As with any timber fence, posts set correctly in concrete are the foundation the whole structure depends on, and a gravel board at the base keeps the vertical boards clear of ground contact. It's a more labour-intensive installation than fitting pre-made panels, which is reflected in the time it takes on site, but the result is a noticeably more solid, durable boundary fence.

When Closeboard & Feather Edge Fencing Is the Right Choice

  • Exposed or particularly long boundary runs where durability matters most
  • Wanting a gap-free, continuous screen with no visible panel joints
  • Boundaries where individual board replacement is preferable to whole-panel replacement
  • Properties prioritising longevity and robustness over speed of installation
  • Higher-specification fencing projects where finish quality is a priority

What's Involved

1

Setting Out

Posts and horizontal arris rail positions are set out along the full boundary run.

2

Post & Rail Installation

Posts are set in concrete and horizontal arris rails fixed between them at the correct heights.

3

Board Fixing

Feather-edge boards are individually nailed on, each overlapping the previous board along the run.

4

Finishing

A gravel board is fitted at the base and the completed fence checked for a continuous, secure finish.

Local to South Mimms, North London & Hertfordshire

Hatfield, on the A1(M) in the Welwyn Hatfield borough, and Mill Hill, on the edge of the Green Belt in the London Borough of Barnet near the M1, both have properties on more exposed boundary lines near major roads, where the extra robustness of closeboard fencing over sustained wind loading is a genuine practical advantage over a lighter pre-made panel.

Closeboard & Feather Edge Fencing — FAQ

Q.Is closeboard fencing better than panel fencing?

It's generally more robust and durable since it's built board by board rather than relying on a pre-made panel frame, and individual boards can be replaced if damaged — the trade-off is that it takes longer to install and is typically a higher-cost option.

Q.Can a single damaged board be replaced without redoing the whole fence?

Yes, this is one of closeboard's practical advantages — because each board is individually fixed to the arris rails, a damaged section can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the run.

Q.Why is closeboard fencing better for exposed boundaries?

The individually fixed board construction and horizontal rail structure generally holds up better under sustained wind loading than a single pre-made panel, which is why it's often specified on longer or more exposed boundary runs.
