Resin-Bound Driveways

A smooth, permeable modern surface bonding aggregate into resin

Resin-bound surfacing mixes natural aggregate with a clear resin binder, laid and trowelled to give a smooth, even, permeable finish — a genuinely different look and texture to block paving or tarmac, and one that's become popular for its modern appearance and drainage performance.

Resin-bound paving works by mixing graded natural stone aggregate thoroughly with a clear UV-stable resin binder, then trowelling the mix over a prepared, stable base to a consistent depth. Because every stone in the mix is individually coated in resin before being laid, rather than the resin simply being poured over loose aggregate, the finished surface is naturally porous — rainwater passes between the aggregate particles down into the sub-base rather than running off the surface, which is a genuine practical advantage for SuDS drainage compliance and for keeping the driveway free of standing puddles. The base beneath a resin-bound surface still needs to be properly prepared, typically a permeable sub-base or an existing sound concrete or tarmac base that the resin is laid over, since the resin layer itself is relatively thin and relies entirely on what's underneath for structural strength. Aggregate colour and blend can be chosen to suit the property, giving a smooth, seamless, contemporary finish without visible joints between individual stones. It's worth being clear that resin-bound is a different product entirely to resin-bonded, where loose stone is scattered onto a resin layer rather than mixed through it — resin-bound is the more durable, better-performing of the two for driveway use.
