Block Paving Driveways

Individually laid blocks giving flexibility in pattern, colour and repair

Block paving builds a driveway from individual concrete or clay blocks laid in a chosen pattern, and its biggest practical advantage over a poured surface is flexibility — in design now, and in repair later, since individual blocks can be lifted and relaid without disturbing the whole drive.

A block paved driveway starts below the surface, not at it: excavating to the right depth, laying and compacting a sub-base sized for vehicle loading, then a bedding layer of sharp sand that the blocks themselves sit on. Get the sub-base wrong and no amount of care in the laying pattern above will stop the driveway rutting or sinking under vehicle weight over time — this is the step that determines whether the finished drive lasts or fails early. Blocks are then laid to the chosen pattern, whether that's a simple stretcher bond, a herringbone pattern that interlocks more effectively under wheel loading, or a basket-weave design, with a compacted, kiln-dried sand joint between each block to lock the surface together. Block paving's real advantage shows itself later, not on installation day: if a section is damaged, stained, or needs lifting to access a utility run underneath, individual blocks can be taken up and relaid without the patch-repair scarring you'd get on a poured concrete or tarmac surface. Permeable block paving systems, using specially shaped blocks with wider joints filled with permeable jointing material, are also available where drainage compliance for the driveway area is a consideration.

When Block Paving Driveways Is the Right Choice

  • Wanting flexibility to choose colour, pattern and layout for the driveway
  • Properties where the drive may need occasional access to underground services
  • Front driveways where kerb appeal and a traditional finish both matter
  • Situations where permeable, SuDS-compliant paving is a requirement
  • Households wanting a surface that can be repaired locally rather than resurfaced wholesale

What's Involved

1

Excavation & Sub-Base

The area is excavated to the correct depth and a compacted sub-base laid to suit vehicle loading.

2

Edging

Edge restraints are set in concrete to hold the pattern and stop blocks spreading under load.

3

Laying

Blocks are laid to the chosen pattern on a sand bedding layer, cut neatly at edges and features.

4

Jointing & Compaction

Kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and the surface compacted to lock everything together.

Local to South Mimms, North London & Hertfordshire

Radlett, the Hertsmere commuter village on the Midland Main Line, and Winchmore Hill, between Southgate and Palmers Green in the London Borough of Enfield, both have plenty of front-garden driveways on established residential streets where block paving's range of colours and patterns is a genuine factor in matching a new drive to the character of the road.

Block Paving Driveways — FAQ

Q.Why does the sub-base matter more than the blocks themselves?

The sub-base carries the actual vehicle loading — if it isn't excavated and compacted correctly to sufficient depth, the driveway will rut or sink over time regardless of how well the blocks above are laid.

Q.Can individual damaged blocks be replaced later?

Yes, this is one of block paving's main advantages — a damaged, stained or lifted block can be taken up and replaced or relaid without disturbing the rest of the driveway.

Q.What's the difference between herringbone and stretcher bond patterns?

Herringbone interlocks blocks at an angle, which spreads and resists vehicle loading more effectively, making it a common choice for driveways; stretcher bond is a simpler running pattern, more often used where the visual effect matters more than load spread.
