New layout, new services, new finish — without an extension

A kitchen renovation within the existing footprint is about making the most of the space that's already there — reworking layout, updating plumbing and electrics to modern demands, and fitting new units and worktops — rather than adding floor area the way a kitchen extension does.

Renovating an existing kitchen without extending it starts with the layout: whether the current arrangement of sink, hob, worktop run and storage is working for how the space is actually used, and whether relocating any of these — moving a sink to make use of a window, repositioning the hob away from a draught-prone doorway — would genuinely improve the room without needing more floor area. Plumbing and electrics are almost always at least partially reworked, since older kitchens rarely have the socket provision, dedicated circuits or plumbing runs that a modern kitchen fit-out, with dishwashers, larger fridge-freezers and multiple worktop appliances, actually needs — moving even one major appliance to a new position usually means extending or rerouting a supply that wasn't there before. Once services are in place, the fit-out itself covers units, worktops, splashbacks, flooring and lighting, with the practical sequencing that any wet trade — tiling, worktop templating and fitting — happens after units are installed but generally before final decoration, so nothing gets damaged by the messier stages of the fit-out. Even without adding space, a well-planned kitchen renovation can transform how a room functions simply by getting the layout, storage and lighting right for how the space is actually used day to day.
