Before any design, planting or hard landscaping can begin, an overgrown, neglected or simply cluttered garden usually needs clearing back to a workable state — removing what's not wanted, assessing what's worth keeping, and preparing the ground for whatever comes next.

Garden clearance covers a wide range of starting conditions, from a garden that's simply become overgrown after a season or two of neglect, to a genuinely dense, years-untouched plot with self-seeded growth, old structures and accumulated debris that needs clearing back before the underlying garden — its shape, its soil, its usable areas — can even be properly assessed. The process starts with identifying what's actually there: established trees or shrubs worth keeping and working around, versus growth that's simply taken over and needs removing entirely, since not every clearance job is about stripping a garden bare, and mature planting worth retaining is often the starting point a new design builds around rather than a blank slate. Once unwanted growth, old fencing, sheds or general debris are cleared, the ground itself often needs further preparation depending on what's planned next — levelling, weed clearance at root level rather than just cutting back top growth, and soil assessment where new planting or lawn is intended. All arisings and waste from a clearance are removed and disposed of responsibly as part of the job, which matters particularly with garden waste, since green waste has its own disposal route separate from general rubbish. A proper clearance sets the ground up honestly for whatever comes next, rather than leaving hidden problems — root systems, poor soil, buried debris — for a later stage of the project to discover.
