Side Return Extensions

Reclaiming the narrow side alley common on terraced and semi-detached houses

A side return extension fills in the narrow strip of side garden — the alley running alongside the kitchen on many terraced and semi-detached houses — and it's one of the most efficient ways to widen a cramped kitchen without extending the full depth of the garden.

Many Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and some semi-detached houses, have a narrow strip of side garden running alongside the kitchen, often left over from the original outrigger design of the house and typically too narrow to be useful garden space in its own right. A side return extension builds into that strip, widening the kitchen or adjoining room out to the boundary line, which is a genuinely efficient way to add usable width without extending further into the main part of the garden, which is often preserved specifically for that reason. Because the extension typically runs alongside an existing rear addition (an outrigger), roof design at the junction between old and new needs particular care — the new roof usually needs to tie into or continue from the existing outrigger roof, and rooflights are commonly used along a side return roof to bring natural light into what would otherwise be a fairly enclosed, narrow space, since a side return by definition doesn't have external walls on more than one or two sides open to the sky. Combined with removing the wall between the original kitchen and the outrigger, a side return extension often achieves a significantly widened, better-lit kitchen and dining space from what was previously two narrow, separate rooms either side of a boundary wall.
